A Culture of Reciprocity - Centre for Independent Studies Research
In A Culture of Reciprocity: What Australia Owes Immigrants and What Immigrants Owe Australia, the Centre for Independent Studies examines the relationship between migration, national identity and social cohesion, exploring how Australians from different backgrounds understand citizenship, belonging and their place in the national community.
The research was based on quantitative polling conducted by Spectre Strategy, surveying 3,552 Australian voters, including a nationally representative sample (n=1,527) and an additional boosted sample of Australians born overseas (n=2,025).
By examining the perspectives of Australian-born citizens and first-generation migrants, including cross-sections across different ethnic and religious backgrounds, the research provides a detailed picture of how Australians understand their shared identity, the expectations they place on one another, and the factors that shape their sense of belonging.
The findings offer important insights into the relationship between migration and social cohesion, highlighting both the common ground Australians share and the differences in how they experience integration and acceptance.
The project showcases Spectre’s ability to design and deliver research that captures the complexity of public attitudes and policy issues, including some of Australia’s most nuanced and contested social questions.
